APC Battery Backup

By Ross Williams | Posted on 1/4/2008 4:05 PM | Comments on 2 comments

Battery backups for servers are a must nowadays; however, i have come to dislike the design of the APC units. Inside one of these APC units, comes with two battery packs with 4 cells attached to each. It has been a common headache for us when one or more of these cells "blow up." This causes the battery cells to become stuck inside the unit. The units come with a hot swappable feature; however, it does no good when you cannot take the cells out normally. The top of the unit must be unplugged completely and the top of the unit must be taken off the retrieve the cells. I can only hope that these manufacturers come up with a better design some day. Please APC, hear my cries!

Ross I have to agree, seeing the batteries in there half exploded seems like a a design mistake. It has been that way with every APC unit I have ever seen.

I have had one of the older batter type APC battery backups (I bought in 1992.)It finally wore out in 2004. I only had to replace the battery twice. It was a great system, but since then I have had three modern APC battery backups, and they ain't worth a damn. When you get use to the best it's hard to get use to something less. The newer type, at least the three I have experienced does not work right at all. I would never know if they were working right or not, till the electricity would go off. Everything plugged in the Backup would go off. There are two rows of outlets on the ones I bought. The row that said surge protection would not have any power to it at any time. The row that said battery backupkeeps turning itself off. Everything would then go off. I still have the third one I bought. It is not even usable at all. So I don't use it. I really need a backup system and if I knew where to find another brand I would buy it. All the computer stores in my area of Arkansas tell me they don't know of another brand. If somebody knows of another brand, please tell me.
